A young leopard ransacks a warthog's burrow in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya.

Things that go bump

When the combined weight of knowledge from three veteran guides with over 100,000 game drives tells me a leopard has had her cubs within the last few days, I am inclined to believe them. The soft folds of fur near her tail confirm this as does her behavior. Fig’s well documented pregnancy is over.

A Cut-throat Business

In this week’s London Evening Standard there was a feature on the Mara’s nemesis: the Serengeti. Apart from some chintzy nonsense about jeweled salads and a farcical faunal faux pas about okapis butting horns (surely topis) it was none too shabby…

Gold Spot

Too often awards are concocted, self-serving and cynical: ‘you advertise in our Bush Companion and we’ll give you a worthless accolade,’ or the winner is the one that garners the most solicited support on social media.

It’s reigning cats and dogs

The herds are in and the fawns are dropping: the larder is full. This is the time of plenty in Conservancies that are seldom short of food on the table.

Final Score

In the rarefied plains of Laikipia you cannot judge by the final tally alone. Often herds of buffalo send lions packing as they are mortal enemies and more are killed by each other than anything else.

Playing the Game

The threesome of prominent, principle predators in one game drive is always worthy of documentation: Valley Camp cheetah mums and cubs...

Year of the Dog

2018 is the year of the dog, so the Olare Conservancy duly obliged with this gorgeously topical display. We had five girls in camp with over a year of Bush Camp nights to their name, all of them aware you get a lot for your ‘pound’ there. This was a superb festive display, dogs in a manger if you like.
