Perhaps the signature species are indulged too often. Many would disagree but I recall 20 years ago Boniface Ole Mpario (Kicheche’s venerable first head guide) gasping with joy as he located two of these immaculately created young scamps race across the plains at dawn: ‘ Now that’ he paused theatrically ‘ is my favourite creature’. He may have a point.

Fast forward a score and George Nampaso – one Bonny would still refer to as kijana (young boy. George is well into his 30s) – is guiding Dave Koovits. There is not much this experienced guide hasn’t shown him but as much as these foxes generate affection they are notoriously hard to photograph being incredibly skittish.

This is where the calm plains of Mara North come into their own, as does George and indeed Dave. Thank you for this bat-eared creche: magical, proving good things can come in small packages.

Whilst we are on Mara North check out the fabled Francis Saruni spilling his thoughts for a minute on working in this captivating Conservancy.
